Mathematics education has gone through many changes, fads, fashions, experiments, etc. The methods used in Common Core today inherit ideas from many different predecessors, and have seen great success in other similar curricula used elsewhere.

They had literally never seen the division symbol for long division. They had no concept of it. They could not show you how the numbers were produced. That is important.

That is fair. assessment though. I was wording that poorly.

I can't speak to your experience, of course, but I'm reasonably confident when the girls start doing long division they will be able to perform the mechanical manipulation proficiently AND they will understand why manipulation is done that way and why it yields the right answer.
