That particular question is probably poorly suited to assess estimation skills, because a child at that level of proficiency with fractions is likely to be able to estimate 5 / 2 exactly. Test questions are matched to the lesson being assessed AND the skill level of the child.

Have you ever looked into the "New Math" taught in the 60s. It's similar in that the core isn't taught but rather the higher levels built off of the core.pic.twitter.com/5L3imsTe3b

This is especially important when understanding how computing takes place, which is quite important in modern america. If you cannot code a math problem, you don't understand it.

Mathematics education has gone through many changes, fads, fashions, experiments, etc. The methods used in Common Core today inherit ideas from many different predecessors, and have seen great success in other similar curricula used elsewhere.

The current approach emphasizes both concepts AND rote learning, as they are each important for different reasons and they each have their place. It's a very good approach.

This is not an settled fact as you present it. It simply isn't.

Which part of what I said is not settled fact? (I'm sure none of it is "settled", but I'm curious which part in particular you're concerned about.)

That there is a lot of rote for one, I saw no rote understanding of WHY the numbers produced in the matrixed math lead to the results they gave. The numbers are correct, the process is however not developing an understanding of the inner workings. of what is happening.

I can give you the correct answer, and a way to produce it, and not understand the underpinnings of that process.

My complaint isn't :"haha this is dumb because it looks silly and it's new" my complaint is that some shortcuts don't teach fundamentals and I found a lot of that. When I ask WHY the answer is correct, and you can't explain it, I find that questionable.

the shortcuts ARE fundamentals ; fundamental techniques like refactoring, commutativity, etc.
