As someone quite proficient in math, I cannot fathom what makes people think this. Possible, only until you see some of the things they do for written math. When my kids first hit the courses I thought "there is no way this is as bad as it is made out to be" I was wrong.

I didn't realize this was called "refactoring" but is basically how I did math in my head as a boy, though at the time this resulted in push back and the occasional deduction for not showing work
