People love to make fun of this common core stuff ("derp derp the teachers are so dumb"), but refactoring is actually a super-useful technique if I'm asked to add 98 + 81, I'll refactor to 100 + 79 = 179. https://twitter.com/mnrothbard/status/998487314354655232 …

Thats how my Dad taught me math, but I dont remember learning that in school in the least. And that is worded kinda confusingly in that question there. Always been able to do math in my head faster and better than 95% of people around me.

I do this in my head all the time... It must be poorly taught. I have issues about how ratios, division and fractions are taught.... They're all the fricken same!

The sum of any two single digits should be something every child has memorized by age 6. Common core math is basically tricks to get around the fact that they were too busy putting condoms on bananas in 1st grade to learn how to count.

My only issue as a parent is that the instructions don’t come home on the worksheets. I know the techniques but not necessarily the names for them. Makes it hard to help.
