Sure - I defend everyone's right to debate or not debate, engage in sexwork or not, own guns or not, etc. I think it's more useful to debate, but that doesn't create an obligation. The problem I see with "shun people, don't debate them" is that it doesn't influence bystanders.

(sadly) i'm starting to see this as a woman thing - shun, punish, ostracize, de-platform. it's seems to be how they treat each other, and they bring it to the public sphere (and voting booth). actively bad for civilization imo.

Every politician's dream is to call their opponents bad & unpopular ideas onto a public debate stage. Who in the world thinks this helps their opponent? It's true that a bad-but-popular idea can flourish there, but only if they can avoid details (see: any democratic socialist)
