I think the founders got it rather right with the Dec. of Independence. Eventually the unifying shared ideals that cause people to identify with, e.g. 'The British Empire' can fade such that their mental states are no longer correlated by loyalty to each other.

You can maintain those unifying shared ideals via strong traditions and teaching children to honor their history and ancestors, fostering interdependence among disparate sub-groups but so many factors will erode those goals. And eventually, as with marriage, people drift apart.
