1/ Good thread. There do seem to be tiers and camps of twitter users. Some are high status, some are low. ...and some people don't fit into ANY of them.https://twitter.com/vgr/status/992441852807688193 …

2/ In any tier there are "content producers" are higher status (where content is funny stories, sick burns, interesting takes, good pictures, etc.), those who interact in interesting ways with the content producers, and those who interact poorly.

3/ I see my own corner of Twitter as social. Demented and sad...but social.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BvLdOE1e5Do …

4/ It's fun to be in a social circle, even if it's dorky. I get dim glimpses of people standing out in the darkness, occasionally trying to cut in and be included. Most don't have anything interesting to say. You can feel for them and still not be able to include them >

5/ Because inclusion means a give-and-take and some folks have a human desire to partake, but can't manage the API.

Lurkers participate. Their participation is invisible to those who "actively" participate, and thus is felt to be non-existent. But the audience members count, even if most of them rarely - or never - step and join in the performance.

I'm not sure that that is what the word "participate" means. In fact, I'm somewhat convinced that that's actually the opposite of what the word "participate" means.

Readers give you money. Audiences give you their attention. They may not be participating in a discussion, but they're participating in what you (I assert, knowing this might not be true for you specifically) think of as "my book" or "my blog" or "my twitter".

Heisenberg's attention: if they don't interact, I don't know they're there.
