What I know about Kanye: 1. He said something controversial after Katrina. Apparently he was already famous, but that was the first I'd heard of him. 2. He married Kim Kardashian, someone else I'd never heard of. I once looked her up and learned she was famous for being famous.

I became aware of Kanye a year ago when reading a book on the prog-rock scene of the 1970s and learning that his video / song "Power" includes a sample from a 1969 prog rock album I like. That's 95% of what I know about Kanye. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L53gjP-TtGE …

also, re " how can you know anything about pop culture but now know about Kanye West?" you're mid-20s
@sonyaellenmann ? As hard as it is to believe, almost everyone stops following pop culture around age 30. You say "not me - I LOVE new music". But...EVERYONE says that.2 replies 0 retweets 7 likes -
You get married. You have kids. You get dogs. You've gotta clean the gutters, take the car to the dealer, attend the PTA meetings, work on your book, check in on your parents who are getting older. ...and YOU'RE getting older. Surplus energy declines, heading towards zero.

You finish a long day's work and you don't have the energy to deal with NEW music. You just want to relax. So you put on some of the music that WAS new...when you were 25. /shrug

There are minor exceptions. I listen to a bunch of newer bluegrass groups. I love Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats. I watch Better Call Saul. ...but in general, one's appetite and room for new culture decreases.

A friend of mine is a stay-at-home mom. She keeps up with pop culture, somewhat, but she ENJOYS it, and even so she has to WORK at it. Now and then she fills us in on some stuff we missed, as idle conversation during our social opportunities.
