There are minor exceptions. I listen to a bunch of newer bluegrass groups. I love Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats. I watch Better Call Saul. ...but in general, one's appetite and room for new culture decreases.
A friend of mine is a stay-at-home mom. She keeps up with pop culture, somewhat, but she ENJOYS it, and even so she has to WORK at it. Now and then she fills us in on some stuff we missed, as idle conversation during our social opportunities.
i don't think it's just fatigue or distraction, there's more to it. it seems to me that every generation thinks what they heard up through their 20s is awesome, and everything that follows is unlistenable garbage. something to do with brain / identity development, maybe?
me: basically stopped listening to pop music after the pixies broke up, just zone out to droning now. my dad: good music ended with neil young, just listens to classical now my grandfather: nothing good since sinatra, get off my lawn.
