Work is not noble. Work is suffering. Humans are unfortunately bound to suffer. That doesn't mean we should praise it, nor continue mankind's efforts to eliminate it.

I disagree. Work is noble as we are bound to a universe ruled by entropy & cannot escape it. We face it like a soldier faces the enemy. Nothing wrong with being more efficient in your work & it's great to have leisure, but THAT REQUIRES WORK.

I mostly agree w
@ItsRobbAllen (work is noble), but also agree w@random_eddie's implicit point that fun is fun. I strongly disagree w@random_eddie 's point that we should eliminate work. In theory, great idea! In practice...leads to sloth, degeneracy, anger, misbehavior. >>>2 replies 0 retweets 2 likes -
There has been lots of sociological research showing that people don't do well w pure leisure, even if they're financially secure. This isn't surprising - we evolved in an environment where work was required to live. It would be QUITE ODD if we did well with zero work.

This is very much the argument that "bioethicists" make when they say that extending human lifespans or eliminating genetic diseases is a bad idea. Also, I suspect you're conflating to some degree "work" with "effortful activity", which of course includes hobbies.

Expanding human lifespans will always run up against the fact we will always have to work. Always. When everyone lives forever, their fortunes will be worthless as nobody wants to make food or the drugs necessary to keep life going.

The story of mankind has been to gradually (and sometimes, suddenly and dramatically) increase the length, quality, and number of our lives while reducing the amount of work needed to have them. +

that's not really the story of mankind - that's the story of the last 250 years.

The first 99.9999% was boring, but the millisecond at the end was great!

It takes a while to make an apple pie from scratch. Some patience is needed.
