Work is not noble. Work is suffering. Humans are unfortunately bound to suffer. That doesn't mean we should praise it, nor continue mankind's efforts to eliminate it.

There has been lots of sociological research showing that people don't do well w pure leisure, even if they're financially secure. This isn't surprising - we evolved in an environment where work was required to live. It would be QUITE ODD if we did well with zero work.

This is very much the argument that "bioethicists" make when they say that extending human lifespans or eliminating genetic diseases is a bad idea. Also, I suspect you're conflating to some degree "work" with "effortful activity", which of course includes hobbies.
