1/ welp, that was odd You know how I sort of fired Old Lead Farm Hand, and promoted New Lead Farm Hand? Today was his first day. Went a bit slow - had to get him up to speed on tractor, 3ph, chainsaw, chainsaw sharpening, etc. He refused to take any pay. REFUSED.

2/ Conversely, I refused to NOT pay him. We argued for 5 minutes. I finally told him that I appreciated his gesture re a slow ramp-up, but I couldn't let him do it, and I INSISTED that he take at least 1/2 pay He relented. Barely. And told me he was pissed at me for insisting

Dude is generous to a fault, and really really likes us, really really likes the work here, thinks we've been far better to him than many other people in his life, and wants to do expensive signalling that he's loyal and will not treat us poorly.

Sounds like a keeper. Just the offer is a nice signal. Sort of reminds of the first date half-hearted offer to split the check thing.

he's done great work for us as a painter, too Good kid. He's a bit scattered, and sometimes gets hung up on simple stuff, so he's not really foreman grade...but at this point we've got 80% of the big projects done, and don't NEED a foreman supervising 5 guys
