My wife & I honeymooned in Italy. It was very odd, being somewhere where NOBODY spoke English, but then we flew out of Miami and it was all better.

Old joke: The great thing about Miami is that it's so close to the United States. (told to me multiple times, usually by South Americans).

When grocery shopping I may hear Russian, Spanish, Vietnamese at a minimum. History supports a Lingua Franca.I nominate English.

Also, I took 5 semesters of Chinese. I know it well enough to travel around China by myself. I can tell you, the amount of dedication you would need to become functionally useful is extreme. A few colleges classes will not do it.

Gee, it's almost like English is the lingua franca of the world... ...Wouldn't be interesting to see how many non-Chinese/asian people of the world are learning Chinese - even as a second language? My guess: not anywhere near as many that are learning ENGLISH.pic.twitter.com/zbmEK3YHxD
