Put on CASINO again and this feels like one of those movies where the screenplay was written to entice a movie star who smokes heavily

De Niro in CASINO is puffing away like Nicholson and De Vito in HOFFA what Ebert called "smoking and acting, but mostly smoking"

Another thing I only just realize about CASINO: it is totally a movie about garbage people. De Niro & Stone are not believably garbage ppl.

I like Casino, a lot. It's a tale about garbage people who temporarily get more than they deserve, but IMMEDIATELY regress and get what they do deserve. You're right, De Niro & Stone look too good for that story...but it's fine.

...because by the end, they look like garbage too. Everyone else looks like garbage from the get go: Pesci, Stone's boyfriend, etc.

I think that's the problem with the movie for me: it doesn't realize that's the theme it really has to hammer.
