2/ This was in the same class where the scientific method was discussed, and how all knowledge is contingent, and we know things only by testing them. The teacher said that. ...and then also said that dumb old-fashioned theories were wrong and didn't need to be disproven.

Only defense there is it IS 'obvious' the mistakes phrenologists made and the harm it caused but not obvious that the field was actually worthless, esp. given the knowledge of the time. Poor reasoning by teacher, isn't it proper to show your work, not just state the conclusion?

I think this was something I managed to pick up on early: in the rigorous (STEM) subjects HOW you reached the conclusion was considered just as/MORE important than reaching the correct conclusion. In the others you can cite the conclusion and work backwards to justify it.
