Speculation: Did the South secede under Lincoln in order to ensure that, even if they lost, there would be a centralized government for them to take over a half century later? If they had waited until President Spooner, that would not have happened.

Lincoln was afraid that secession would set a dangerous precedent and fracture the US even further. 3% of the population were not murdered, most volunteered and huge numbers died of disease.
