1/ There was no "right" side in the War of Northern Aggression. The north fought to end slavery (provisionally, in conquered territories, not its own) and to preserve centralized hegemonic rule. The south fought to exercise the right of secession...and preserve slavery.https://twitter.com/MollyMcKew/status/981143454553174016 …

4/ The Civil War was about status and control and centralization more than it was about slavery. Northern progressives were irate that rural southern rednecks were DOING THINGS WRONG, and if they had to murder 3% of the population to exert their dominance...well, they would.

The South got pissy when they lost the election and went off the deep end and then fired on federal troops. Lincoln wasn't gonna do anything until the South fired a shot.

Lincoln wasn't gonna fire the first shot, but made sure someone else would. Fort Sumter was clearly US military property (literally built the island), but in a completely untenable position (controlled a major port). There wasn't not going to be a fight over that island.

Listen to the Haiti series on Revolutions Podcast. Long 3-way civil war over slavery resulted in the $#!^hole it is now.
