2/ The North initiated a war that killed 3% of the population, large numbers of them civilians and involuntary draftees. Scaled to current population numbers, that's a civil war that killed 10.5 million citizens.

4/ The Civil War was about status and control and centralization more than it was about slavery. Northern progressives were irate that rural southern rednecks were DOING THINGS WRONG, and if they had to murder 3% of the population to exert their dominance...well, they would.

*Secession* was primarily, but not exclusively, about slavery. The war itself was largely about denying the South's right to secede.
