Well, http://dictionary.com is not helpful. It lists first known use as ~1960... Pretty sure the press you describe is older than that.

And wikipedia isn't much better. It seems to deny that neither the term nor the press trace their origins to German "klug" meaning 'clever'. It seems to me it's too obvious to NOT be the origin of both.
