Thirteen year olds don't need to be married to adults at the direction of their parents, which is the core issue.

I agree with you. That is a very valid concern. ...but should we not be just as concerned by "at the direction of adults" regarding all these other issues?

Guns: kids have speech rights independent of parents, so doesn't fit well into the exemplar, but parents can compel speech. Abortions & trans health care: parent can't force you to have either. Parents can't force you to have sex. But they can marry you off.

Sex, trans, and marriage all come down to a minor saying "yes, I consent", while in a position where parents have incredible control over them. A CONSISTENT framework for acknowledging that power dynamic would be a good thing.

I see your point. I do. I'm sticking with "make marrying thirteen year olds illegal" because it's an out for child molesters I think should not be state sanctioned.

Note that I'm a high-theory kind of guy. I bet that I would actually agree with you on 19 out of 20 cases that you present. ...but I want COHERENCE, not just expediency. A concept of rights is a good thing, lest ad hockery lead us in swamps.
