“Tragedy is when I stub my toe, comedy is when you fall into an open manhole and die.” Something similar applies to politics too. Authoritarian overreach is whatever inconveniences you, sensible regulations are whatever destroys strangers.

The prohibition and the war on drugs are the best examples of this, brutal, bloody, and ineffective and yet their supporters just can’t seem to give a shit about the lives they ruin because it doesn’t touch them directly.
