Second this hardcore. Need for taking (and paying college tuition rates!) courses in any common language is functionally gone *unless* you are seeking position that requires such credentials. I've been learning Spanish, German, Russian, and a little Japanese in my free time.

Between the tonal insanity and the requirement to learn literally thousands of unique characters, there are huge barriers to entry for both written and spoken Chinese. The only reason it has any appeal is the number of people who speak it exclusively.
