"Doesn’t mean the only answer was political repression." OK, great. Now, let's apply this same standard to ending slavery in the US. UK ended slavery without a single person being killed. Lincoln killed 3% of the US population. Should be not recoil in horror from that?

So it seems that to be logically consistent we need to conclude: * yes, Lincoln was a blood soaked tyrant (and Pinochet was pretty bad too) or * war in defense of human rights is legit, Pinochet did a much better job than Lincoln but "Pinochet bad; Lincoln good" is right out
