I get where he's coming from, there was definitely a " can't win for losing" vibe throughout the book. I liked it though.
when book 2 is release maybe he'll feel better
He can have his opinion, but I for one enjoyed the fac that all the characters were flawed and had failures, and it felt like any one of them could have been killed at the tense points, it kept suspense high.
I saw Inverse Mary Sue open for Hall and Oates once back in the 80s. Great show.
I wouldn't say they're entirely orthogonal. If your character is so good at everything they're never challenged by anything then you can't have much of a plot.
