Reading the New York Times Magazine article on Title IX. Early on, come across a statistic: "Federal statistics compiled by the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network show that only 310 out of 1,000 rapes are reported to the police".

I went looking for the source of that statistic. I wasn't surprised to find out that it's wrong.

Start with the fact that there is more recent data than RAINN appears to have used, the National Crime Victimization Survey for 2014/2015. It shows a slightly higher number: 336 in 2014, 325 in 2015.pic.twitter.com/awLEagwbKh

But this is a quibble; the numbers are within the same range, and I too have occasionally relied on statistics compiled by a third party rather than trolling through the federal data myself. The bigger problem becomes apparent when you look at that table.

I was about to correct you and say "pedant: trawling, not trolling, I think" but - being a pedant - looked it up first, and saw that the second definition of troll is a synonym for trawl. Huh!
