Parents just got a new furnace and a new central air put in (including all ductwork) 1400 sq ft house. I think it was just under $10k total

1) If you can stand the sight / sound of them, swamp (evaporative) coolers do an amazing job. Grandparents used to have them on their cabin.

these work much better in dry climates; in moist climates like here, evaporation doesn't work so well

Vaulted ceilings can work very well in TX, if systems are designed right. They are vital for passive systems(air in low, heat vented out hi)

this room does not have a vaulted ceiling. ceiling is 8' tall. has SLOPED WALLS, bc it's under a roof.
