after you've got chalkline snapped, put top of each shingle in next course on chalkine, tap in 2 galvanized roofing nails

those cedar shakes look to be meh quality. Might want to rip off & start over w asphalt shingles from Lowes / Home Depot

if you do go that route, trick on first row (down near eave) is to do a double row, on top of each other, but offset to side

this ensures that the slots in shingle course #1 don't line up w shingle course #2.

OBTW, that's also important when doing following rows (either asphalt or shake): offset by 1/2 shingle width each new row
