1/ Fixed a bug. But it's not elegant. By which I mean it IS elegant, but we've got an ugly legacy architecture so my fix isn't ugly enough.

2/ after getting the bug fix in and all of the tests passing in 45 min, we're now having a 5-way concall to redo it the ugly way.
