There are cultural norms that a pie chart expresses percentages of an organic whole; you don't use a pie chart for heights in a classroom.
@MorlockP While I agree with you (obviously), I must admit it is a very good way to display relative sizes. Perhaps the norm should change.
@MorlockP Alternately, use 1-level treemaps? Squares/rectangles for arbitrary collections, pie charts for natural parts-of-the-whole ?
