@DerToteKaiser actually it WAS a KC-135. That part - and the emergency landing - was real.
I'd like to clarify: the KC-135 I was in in 1990 was over the Gulf of Mexico and not the Persian Gulf. >>

@DerToteKaiser Nope. ROTC cadets can hitchhike around the country in USAF cargo planes, if there's extra room (or at least could in the 90s)
