How'd you learn it was Pournelle's ? Personal knowledge, or Fandom back channels, or?

I saw a mention of it when it went up for sale on some tweet or tech/fannish news place, got the address from the article, plugged it into Zillow, and I guess saved the house accidentally because I got an email letting me know it was back on the market

I remember seeing it when it went on the market. This seriously makes me want to cry. I would have killed to own the “before” version. The “after” is viscerally repulsive in the appallingly sterile way that seems to be in vogue.

I had a house with three rooms of custom mahogany bookcases. Rolling ladder, the whole bit. Realtor told me to rip them out: “Nobody needs bookcases anymore.” I refused. It sat on the market for 15 months. Finally ripped them out, painted everything beige. Sold in three weeks.

This pains me. Deeply. I wish we could've bought your house, bookcases intact. I need them!!!

For what it’s worth: In the subsequent house, we built a bunch of IKEA Billy bookcases with double extensions on top. (Need to bolt them to the wall for safety.) Two weekends, $2000, done. And if I ever need to rip them out, no emotional damage.

This is exactly what I have. But I really wish for the real deal instead.

wife has a craft room and she wants a wall of storage cabinets I'm brainstorming the cheapest way to get it done - maybe plywood carcasses and make rustic doors from barn wood? Ikea shelves are another idea...

The IKEA shelves can have doors added, either solid or glass. It’s a pretty decent system. Just drill lateral holes in a few places to bolt the bookcases together, and fasten the top of each to the wall with molly bolts. Won’t be as cheap as scavenging, but speed matters, too.
