Every tanker dreams of a hovertank that can't be disabled by small arms fire shredding the skirt. Because tank-in-mud is their deepest dismay. It turns them into low density infantry. And you don't even want to think about the ass-chewing you'll get if you get back to base...

Anecdotally somebody told me that for every design of hover tank, it is possible to design an antitank mine that will flip the tank upside down.

Hovertanks had a 20 year window for being Uber High Tech in SF, from 1973 to 1992 or so. Then they vanish. Now, with ATGMs, you can argue that tanks have either no place on the battlefield, since two ATGMs mean one dead tank. Sorta like battleships.

Cube square law is not kind to legged vehicles. The weight is pressed into a smaller footprint so they drop into the mud even faster than the guys at the start of the thread.

in my novels, I have some backpackers on the moon use a legged autonomous cargo vehicle to carry their tent and supplies ...but much harder surface, and 1/6 g
