One more great Japanese corporate motto for my list: Morisawa, a Japanese type foundry, whose motto translates to "Contributing to society one word at a time." (My somewhat poetic translation; all translation is necessarily a creative act.)

      The original is 文字を通じて社会に貢献する。

"Contributing to society by..." is a recurring theme in Japanese corporate mottos, particularly for "less sexy" companies, and I love it. It instantly grounds the work in the (true!) greater purpose.

Still my favorite, from the people you go to when you need to cut something with error tolerance the width of a hair. Expect to get asked "For clarification, what type of hair are we talking about."https://twitter.com/patio11/status/1084744358266425344?s=20&t=Fef7kD6Cd4S_Dcpx_Wy8sg …

Or my all time favorite, lightly paraphrased: “Contributing to society through excellence in precision cutting tools.”

Another favorite, from a salaryman friend's company, which I'll also be a bit poetic with: "To measure the world as never before possible." (I would bet for most readers at least one important liquid in your life goes through something they built.)

There's a sort of reflexive enlightened cynicism in my class in American society and, despite my many issues with Japanese corporate culture, the notion that you can have a glorious purpose *unironically* in service to others is one I will never stop loving.

this is one feature of Japanese culture [ seen from a distance ] that's great; another is respect for craft / unending pursuit of perfection [ at least as evidenced in every video or book I've ever seen re a Japanese carpenter / brush maker / sushi chef / etc. ] one question >

how much of this expression is earnest, and how much is pro-forma? Because I can imagine a continuum from "they 100% mean it" to "it's part of the culture to say it, so if you ever admin that you're satisfied doing good-enough work, that signals absolute apathy and suck".

Emotional labor is a thing performed everywhere, and I doubt the local convenience store clerk feels a great deal of attachment, but you'll find far more Really Means It across wider range of social classes / professions than in U.S.
