Tonight's movie: Arrival (the 2016 Denis Villeneuve movie, not the completely different 1996 Charlie Sheen movie) Once again I will say: go see this movie, see it cold, don't watch trailers or reviews or anything, just go see it If you like science fiction, go see this movie

Didn't love it. Wanted to love it. Love linguistics. Love aliens. Love first contact stories. Not sure what didn't click.

Well, [trying really hard not to put spoilers in the timeline] it's not REALLY about any of those things, is it? And what it actually is about is kind of... squishy. You're not a big fan of squish, I believe.

Yeah, it's actually a movie about therapy not first contact

I love the burn, even if I don't understand it. The problem I have with it, ideologically, is that if act 3 is foreordained, then there's no free will, and everything is pointless. Absolute horror show.

>no free will, and everything is pointless Ah! Yes, of course. I should have understood your Vulcan problem with the movie.

That's not Vulcan, that's Catholic! A story is about people being confronted w decisions and choosing! This wasn't a story, it was a roller coaster ride...wait, no, a people-mover. Getting angry all over again.

Any story ... um, like this [trying to reduce spoilers] will have to be ... um, like that. To enjoy them you have to embrace the contradiction - that people make decisions even though the decisions have already been made. Not to everyone's tastes, obviously.
