Tonight's movie: Arrival (the 2016 Denis Villeneuve movie, not the completely different 1996 Charlie Sheen movie) Once again I will say: go see this movie, see it cold, don't watch trailers or reviews or anything, just go see it If you like science fiction, go see this movie

Well, [trying really hard not to put spoilers in the timeline] it's not REALLY about any of those things, is it? And what it actually is about is kind of... squishy. You're not a big fan of squish, I believe.

Did you like Predestination? aka Heinlein's All You Zombies, the movie?

The weirdness of the "here's some random right-wing weirdo who is going to fuck up the human race's first contact" was odd for me Gotta have some weird right-wing bad guy, even if it makes exactly zero narrative sense

I get that. For me, despite that being a critical plot point, I didn't *take* it as a critical plot point. I absorbed it as part of the general background noise (which itself was super important), i.e. "while we're focused here on the object the entire world is falling apart"

I liked it, but in a weird way I think it could have worked better as a stage play.

Interesting! It was adapted from a short story (which I haven't read). Now you're making me wonder how I'd stage it. I think the *film* only works as a film.. I mean, tautology, right, but I think part of what makes the film so *good* is that it's a good *film*. Craftsmanship.

Reminder that that misread the short story they adapted it from. Gwen has a breakdown of it on their website.https://www.gwern.net/Story-Of-Your-Life …

I'll have to read the breakdown after I read the story. :)
