11/ There is relatively little spent on fit-and-finish inside dorm rooms. Wall to wall industrial carpet, not hardwood floors. Kitchens have cheap tile, big industrial stoves. Far less ft^2/person than in a home kitchen. So I suspect that building college-arch-style = $3M/bed

12/ I didn't say "4 bedroom", I said "4 beds", by which I meant "couple + 2 kids" (which is typical).https://twitter.com/Cobylefko/status/1501933527859810313 …

Coby @CobylefkoReplying to @MorlockPNo, I didn’t choose to start a thread about four bedroom homes at all. I’m not sure what you’re on about, but those aren’t the parameters. We can have disagreements on how to live, (& I’ve featured many great communities with SFH homes) but you’re not operating in good faith2 replies 0 retweets 7 likesShow this thread -

13/ one definition of middle income is "income that is two-thirds to double the U.S. median household income" which spans ~$60k k - $170k. $170k income folks buy $600k houses. Not saying all middle class folks do, ofc.https://twitter.com/JosephusSnyder/status/1501933475258978309 …

15/ Tracked down the building OP was talking about https://www.fourwindsbarn.com/ It's beautiful ! ...but it's uninsulated and is at least mostly one big room. The devil may or may not be in the details, but the pricing sure is. Insulation, adding real lights, outlets, water...pic.twitter.com/UUS67uykWA

17/ I love this kind of project, and it's why I built half of my previous house myself, and it's why I took a timberframing course at Yestermorrow a while back ... but this can't be a model for mass construction. 99.9% of people can't do/don't want thishttps://twitter.com/calebvoskamp/status/1501939865910333450 …

19/ Right, this is my point. 0.01% of people want this...and they already do it. This is not a model for the greater world, even if you (and I ) prefer it.https://twitter.com/calebvoskamp/status/1501940400742752272 …

calebvoskamp @calebvoskampReplying to @calebvoskamp @EricRichards22 @MorlockPThe lumber, tamarack, cedar, pine, etc was sourced and then cut at a small Mennonite sawmill. All done with artist passion, farmers knowhow. Shoestring (relatively) budget. It can be done. Just don't expect it to be done for you by committee.3 replies 0 retweets 13 likesShow this thread -

20/ I have a hunch that the price of brick building has actually gone up, in absolute terms, bc of "cost disease". Because most other tasks have gotten much more efficient, but masons still stack bricks one at a time, by hand. Curious for data.https://twitter.com/calebvoskamp/status/1501943505471434758 …
