4/ and these trad LARPing folks have this complaint about the modern world: "kids have too much independence! It's cruel to push kids out of the nest and onto their own two feet at such a young age!" WTF !!!!

Second time you've mentioned freedom and I'm not sure I understand what you're picturing in a generational household, outside of some ludicrous stereotype.
-
Freedom needs to include among other things a freedom to potentially fail.

Anecdotally, getting kicked out of the house as soon as HS was over with was probably the best thing to happen to me. Nothing like a dose of cold reality to motivate one to get off the ass.

My kids do enough chores to justify their upkeep. One's planning on staying for a while. The other wants to move out as soon as possible. I support their decisions.

Hmm. I honestly had not thought critically about the ‘don’t move out’ assertion, taking it at face value. Starting change my mind here. I also fell into the ‘what about x fringe case’ thinking.

It is like single parents - yeah, I know amazing single moms and dads, but that doesn’t change that for most having married parents both there is vastly preferable. By same token moving out and being a ‘real’ adult and maturing is better than staying at home until 25+.

On the other hand I’ve already been trying to counterprogram the “you need college to succeed” message kids are hammered with. My kids are welcome to stay as long as they want, and that’s much better than jumping into massive college debt to get out of the house.
