11/ Spending 20% of my income for a few years to "build character" (translation: have freedom / be an adult) sounds stunningly cheap.https://twitter.com/mitchstadt/status/1501672801119260675 …
12/ reverse mortgages are typically sold to 70 year olds, not 45 year olds who just had a kid leave for college.https://twitter.com/mitchstadt/status/1501673898013650944 …
13/ you can be on GREAT terms w your parents, but still want to go to the gym and push the bar yourself instead of letting your dad lift it for youhttps://twitter.com/mitchstadt/status/1501674267510857728 …
14/ sure, I absolutely think that some people trade off freedom for money ; happens all the time let them do what they wanthttps://twitter.com/Laserpig_Utopia/status/1501680340942921742 …
It's obviously a bad decision for a lot of situations. It makes a ton of sense in a more equity-focused economy, but it's silly to dump 20-30% of your income into a strangers' mortgage for 7+ years just to build character or whatever.
This whole "leap out of family home as early as possible" as some test of manliness is a bad default, and it shows in every reverse mortgage sold to an empty nester at the expense of their lineage. You should want to pay rent to the owners of your inheritance.
Anecdotally living with parents for a couple of years while both working full time sure does make the down payment on your house a lot bigger, and lower mortgage costs translate into very good financial stability, that's contingent on being a functional adult already though.
Also only works if you're on good terms with your parents/they don't mind subsidizing (i.e. essentially paying your rent) you for a couple of years.
