"MODERN MAN" is sad that mom is making him get a job and pay his own rent. "I don't have TIME for a job, MOM, I need to support my guild in MMOPRG 19: THE MMORPG-ing !!!!!"pic.twitter.com/0WvH4RQOew

2/ The scope of adult autonomy is ever shrinking. 150 years ago you could turn 15, hop on a train, go out west, get a job in a mine, buy a pistol from the hardware store, take up blacksmithing, leave that and join the merchant marine, sail to Japan ... all before age 18.

3/ Today it's pretty typical to be 25 years old, still in college (bc you need a BFA if you want to write short stories! ), still on mom and dad's health insurance, never yet had a job.

4/ and these trad LARPing folks have this complaint about the modern world: "kids have too much independence! It's cruel to push kids out of the nest and onto their own two feet at such a young age!" WTF !!!!

5/ I know relationship-counselor-and-friend-to-murderer Roman McClay has this stance (he found it painful to live on his own and have to manage his own life as a 30 year old, and thought it would be better if his dad and granddad told him what to do) >>>

6/ I also know (second hand) that he grew up without a dad / raised by a single mom. ...so I see this pathetic neediness as an unfortunate symptom of his unfortunate problem I suspect that this is what drives most of these trad LARPers: a profound sense of risk and instability

8/ Speaking for myself, I had to jump through hurdles to get out of my home a year early (I started working on a 4 year plan for early HS graduation in 8th grade).

9/ "you're not allowed to stand on your own feet until your 18" is already insanely restrictive ...and these LARPers are trying to make it even WORSE for young adults? GTFO

Every family needs to actually think about what is appropriate to their situation, but I’m pretty ok with “financial independence at 18” as a societal norm.

11/ Spending 20% of my income for a few years to "build character" (translation: have freedom / be an adult) sounds stunningly cheap.https://twitter.com/mitchstadt/status/1501672801119260675 …

It's obviously a bad decision for a lot of situations. It makes a ton of sense in a more equity-focused economy, but it's silly to dump 20-30% of your income into a strangers' mortgage for 7+ years just to build character or whatever.

12/ reverse mortgages are typically sold to 70 year olds, not 45 year olds who just had a kid leave for college.https://twitter.com/mitchstadt/status/1501673898013650944 …

This whole "leap out of family home as early as possible" as some test of manliness is a bad default, and it shows in every reverse mortgage sold to an empty nester at the expense of their lineage. You should want to pay rent to the owners of your inheritance.

Conversely to your point, one of the few times this *does* make sense is when you are not on good terms with your own parents.

Anecdotally living with parents for a couple of years while both working full time sure does make the down payment on your house a lot bigger, and lower mortgage costs translate into very good financial stability, that's contingent on being a functional adult already though.
