the biggest difference between miersheimer's view of all this and my own is that I dont have as much respect for Russia's desires or rather, i understand and respect them, but not to the extent that i think theyre worth going along with

"be it so. the conquest of eastern europe is russia's custom; prepare your artillery. but we in the west also have a custom. when a nation invades our clients we strangle their economy, arm our client, and grind the invader to dust. let us all act according to national customs."

Mearsheimer's view is that Ukraine is a core security concern for Russia but I frankly don't buy this. We are not going to invade Russia because they have nuclear weapons. Were Ukraine to join NATO this wouldnt change in the least. Conventional considerations are immaterial here.

What we're seeing now, I guess, is the West coming very quickly to the question of how aggressively we're willing to defend states that aspire to join the West. I think the synchronized and overwhelming response of the US and EU to Russia contradicts Mearsheimer's worldview.

Minor points. It would be nice to have Russia as an ally against China, but I don't know that this was ever a realistic hope. Also I don't much care about Iran.

The final thing I will touch on is that Ukraine *is* important to the West as a cultural and geographical frontier in our project of global hegemonization. This deserves its own post; for now I just want to mention that this is a core issue that, clearly, the West values highly.

postscript. russia is a geographically important but basically medium-sized and shrinking country. its future is either joining the rest of the West, somehow, or becoming a Chinese client. i don't see true independence for them again, especially now.https://twitter.com/NewtypeApologia/status/1501361618948702210?t=-WoU7Ixqnc7gQZTZhKLwUQ&s=19 …
