Just spend $50 on a used copy of "Introduction to Three Dimensional Climate Modelling" as an input to a project I will never ever get around to: writing a codebase to simulate martian climate during/after terraforming, so I can build a future history of Mars after Ari 4

2/ Venus is HARD, unless you just want to have city blimps floating in the skies. You've heard about the "crushing pressure". That just means "huge huge huge pile of atmosphere". You've got to get rid of 95% of it. Tons of energy to eject it...https://twitter.com/sound_hologram/status/1500848994045644806 …

3/ Plus, even once you get most of the atmosphere removed somehow, the surface temperature is around 900° F. Radiating that away is not going to be easy!

4/ Absolutely huge sun shields orbiting the planet, or placed in its L1 point, to put Venus into perpetual darkness, and letting it radiate into the void for centuries would be a good start.

let's not just brush past big city blimps like that standard atmospheric pressure and earth-normal gravity, abundance of all nonmetallics, there are two places in the Solar System with those three traits and the other is Earth

This is the best try I know of but it appears to assume Enceladus is completely water, which it isn't. Also assumes an exawatt of power can be had for the expenditure of 200 billion pounds!!! https://www.orionsarm.com/fm_store/TerraformingVenusQuickly.pdf …

Imagine a decentralized civilization of Venusian colonists though where you have individual zeppelin homesteads. Acid death still scary but "you can't take the sky from me" quite literally.

I saw a con presentation from a scientist on "terraforming" Venus. His idea was to build a metal shell around the planet, supported by atmosphere pressure. The population would live on top of the shell. I wouldn't want to live there.

11/ yeah, I love terraforming as an author, but IRL I think that we'll colonize the entire solar system in planetary domes, tunnels, Bernal spheres, O'Neil tubes, and Standford toruses.https://twitter.com/forsoothic/status/1500858662843297803 …

If we're building giant pressure vessels like that, I'm not sure why we wouldn't just spin them up and skip Venus entirely.

Lithosphere overturn! All it takes is exposing rock to a depth of about 1km, adding a reagent that allows carbonates to form, and building a sun shield to bring the surface temperature down enough so that carbonates don't immediately decompose. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/268569275_Terraforming_Venus_A_Challenging_Project_for_Future_Colonization/link/576152a208ae2b8d20ed5448/download …

We'll have token colonies on Luna, Mars, and in a free-floating tin can somewhere just to prove we can ("Why? Because f*** you, that's why!"), and then we'll have run out of reasons to do it and people who want to. I still like science fiction, though.
