I think the visualization teams in many media outlets need to rethink how they map the war. Most do maps like the one on the left. But that is not reflecting their own reporting. There aren't entire *areas* that are 'under control'. On the right is a more accurate alternative. pic.twitter.com/WMBYcezOwQ

3/ let's take that final image Look at that section of white countryside, entirely surrounded by Russian controlled roads. If you're Ukraine, how do you get troops in there? How do you get them out? How do you supply them?pic.twitter.com/sBkEe9cvRU

4/ You can't. That area is entirely inaccessible to you. There may not be Russian boots on every square meter of that white area, but Russia controls it in so far as they deny anyone else's ability to control it. This is how war works.

5/ You don't need to blow something up if you have the resources to march on it and THEN blow it up. You don't even need to march on it if you have the resources at the right location such that you could march on it as soon as you want.

6/ One extreme version of this in naval warfare is the "fleet in being" - if you have sufficient assets in a harbor that COULD sail at any time and defeat enemies in area X ... the enemies will never sail to / invade area X.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fleet_in_being …

7/ In war, in war games, heck, even in chess, this dynamic appears all the time. I don't have to seize your knight - I move my pawn to a location that your knight can not move into that area without being captured. Often these dynamics work 3 or 4 layers deep.

yeah, I mean if Russia controls the roads in and out of a place, and there's no notable troop concentrations in the area already... they control it that's basically what controlling territory means

10/ No. Logistics challenges are measured in tens or hundreds of tons per day. E.g. > An armored division of the Army can use as much as 600,000 gallons of fuel a day.https://twitter.com/JNwk14/status/1500248208626311169 …

Bit late fir that, a drone with lift capacity of even 100 pds, or ingredients to make ammunition or explosives or medicine while not decisive, would be useful

11/ I never said that this was "all roads". I said that if the Russians control THOSE roads, they control the areas around them.https://twitter.com/KDelchev1/status/1500249311308832769 …

These are not ALL roads, these are the roads controlled by Russia (usually, but not always the main roads). That's a very notable difference and it was demonstrated in practice by the attacks on the giant column, stalled on its way to Kiev.
