I'm not a published author yet so idgaf about Kickstarter myself. Re: crowding out: an author in my group went to a writer's conference recently and said that the organizers didn't invite big name authors on purpose this year so that the smaller authors could get seen. It worked

Crowd out, hell. There have to be thousands of new Kickstarter accounts created just to get Sanderson's books. Some of those will check out other Kickstarters. Worked on me.

This is true in a more general sense. Hugely successful Kickstarter for fantasy books => more people interested in seeing what fantasy literature is all about
