I just spent 45 minutes * calling up a heating fuel company * speaking to a human * having her email me PDF forms * opening the PDF forms to edit answers in * verifying my checking account #, employer street addr, etc etc etc etc * saving file * emailing it back

2/ This should be (a) done via their website (which they have! ...and it even has SOME interfaces like 'check your account', but not 'new signup') (b) filled in via some smart plugin in my browser This was just absolute sheer friction, for no purpose at all.

3/ back in the 90s there was some fever dream discussion of "software agents" that would be dispatched out onto the internet to do research for you / do things on your behalf we got the architecture backwards there - one big server [ google ] does the research ahead of time

4/ ...but the CONCEPT of a smart agent is still a decent one, architecture aside. I don't see "solving the heating fuel subscription problem" as a big enough problem domain to make a viable company, but there are thousands of such insults.

this friction is good and, in my opinion, incredibly important. removing it does us all great harm https://twitter.com/illiteralworst/status/1496556204901994503 …

6/ (a) thank you for responding to my request for more info (b) I find this response utterly horrifying / wrong / typical-mind-fallacy / paternalistic / borderline fascist. Nothing FORCED is good. Sorting, OTOH, is excellent. >>>https://twitter.com/illiteralworst/status/1499394763858092032 …

imo the drive to total efficiency has a part to play in modern society "coming apart" forced interactions are important. otherwise, we self sort, atomize & rapidly lose touch w/ anything outside our circle(s). eventually, we lose ourselves. maybe standing in long queues is Good

7/ all of my absolute worst experiences in life have come from forced interactions all of my best experiences in life have come from voluntarily sorting into small like minded circles the draft, the DMV, being beaten by middle school bullies: forced friends & marriage: chosen

8/ no, we share exactly the same frame the only kind of person who would say something like this > being 'forced' to sit on the subway with a bunch of other people you'd otherwise never encounter. is someone who thinks their preferences are universalhttps://twitter.com/illiteralworst/status/1499396597624492032 …

i think you have the wrong frame for 'forced'. you can get from chelsea to the upper west side however you like, but if you wanna go faster, there's tremendous value in being 'forced' to sit on the subway with a bunch of other people you'd otherwise never encounter.

The perspective isn’t about your inconvenience, it’s about preventing the other from taking too much information from you too easily, with little way for you to grab the process and say “now wait a minute, you don’t need that!”
