pretty sure that the bottom one is a much more popular Evangelical stance (plus also Catholic shitpoaster trope)https://twitter.com/dsawyer/status/1498759460751396864 …

Catholics: Human nature is fallen b/c Adam and Eve were susceptible to sin and thus infected the world with evil. All humans are born tainted with the evil or original sin and require salvation. Also Catholics: Evil people are literally demon possessed. Pick one, please.

From the beginning to the end of the Book, the two work together. The Devil is the (usurper) prince of this world until the Second Coming, when he is cast forever into the lake of fire and bound completely as Christ takes back His own.

I absolutely agree that demons are real and can possess people. I think that the correct framework for explaining why 99.9% of the evil actions we see take place, take place are bc "people have free will and choose evil".

Oh sure. But it gets sticky when looking at things like demonic obsession. “Are these intrusive and sinful thoughts that tempt me just coming from me? Or could they have another origin? Or could both be working together?”

Which is why regular confession is important. One wants both to heal the harms of one’s own sinful choices and reforge the chinks in the spiritual armor that are openings for external attack. And the grace of the sacrament does both.

Which isn’t to say that we shouldn’t be careful about attributing things solely to fallen spiritual powers that are also the fault of humans being broken and choosing apparent goods over true goods. But we shouldn’t ignore St. Paul about our true struggle either.

The reason that I push to downplay demon narrative is that I see a huge failure of "all the BAD STUFF is demons ...so my own sinful nature might lead me into, you know, eating an extra ho-ho that I shouldn't ...but without demonic takeover, I'm incapable of ever doing REAL sin"

Oh sure. “The Devil made me do it,” isn’t a very good defense anyway, because you usually have to be in some really bad stuff to open yourself up to full on possession. And I can only say that those who taught me made sure we knew “really bad stuff” wasn’t just the occult.

Which is also consonant with the Fall, as simply not listening to (how I would imagine the scene, given that the Devil is a fallen Seraphim) the giant, fiery snake with wings was an option and probably (definitely) a good idea.
