1/ I strongly disagree. I saw another variants of this graph earlier, also with the inverted Y axis, and I strongly disliked it. Yes, "worth less" should be lower on the Y axis ... but by making the scale "rubles per dollar" you inadvertently create a logarithmic axishttps://twitter.com/zevross/status/1498365808287920128 …

This is a small thing but distinctly helps with #dataviz interpretation. Note how the @nytgraphics reversed the y-axis so that it's clear that higher values mean a decline in the value of the currency. This extra effort reduces the chance that the chart will be misinterpreted. pic.twitter.com/2QiKzivVV7

2/ What do I mean? The rouble falling in value by 50% moves it from 30 to 60 - 3 divisions. The rouble falling in value by ANOTHER 50% ...moves it from 60 to 120 , or 6 vertical divisions. The number of divisions has doubled...to express a fall in value that's only 1/2 as big

3/ If the rouble fell to $0, how many vertical divisions would it require to show this? INFINITE vertical divisions. This is absolute garbage data visualization.

4/ The correct approach, IMO, is to change the Y axis to $/rouble. Top of Y axis should be relabeled $0.20. Bottom of Y axis should be relabeled $0.00.

5/ Every single American is used to thinking in terms of "how much does X cost in terms of American dollars?". ...and they're used to linear scales, not log. You show a graph of MSFT prices? Y axis = price in $; linear scale.

6/ You show a graph of gasoline prices? Y axis = price in $; linear scale. You show a graph of pork chop prices? Y axis = price in $; linear scale. I have zero idea why someone would praise this garbage unintuitive graph as good. I doubt 1 reader in 10 realizes its log.

This has nothing to do with they having inverted the y axis thou, this is just a feature of exchange rates in general because they are fractions.

Weird thing to me is that they inverted the y axis instead of using USD/RUB
