So you're saying that basically boomerhood = demon possession? You know...this may be the most convincing argument I've ever heard for the existence of literal demons.https://twitter.com/rnewquist/status/1497227432813903878 …

Boomers gotta boom. Although that’s really just another way of saying demons, so nevermind. https://twitter.com/AaronIrber/status/1497205543361986579 …

I've always said that the clear existence of real evil in the world is a big part of what led me back to religion.

Interesting. Worked the other way for me. 1 of the early chinks in my doctrinal armor was the realization that humans are capable of such deeply evil deeds that the idea that an outside spiritual force motivates said evil is both superfluous & a problem for the sovereignty of God

The idea that outside spiritual forces motivate evil is not actually Christian doctrine, though (excepting some minority sects). Christian doctrine is that evil is separation from God (the ultimate good). Outside forces (demons/devils) may nudge us...

...but ultimately that's where the free will of humanity comes into play. To be closer to God, or further. IMO, Christianity is the only major religion/philosophy that offers a convincing explanation for even the *existence* of evil, much less what it means for the world.

Atheism sure as hell doesn't offer any convincing explanation for why Evil exists.

Athiesm doesn't offer explanations, though svl philosophies that entail atheism do. My view is a v. pagan one: Evil things are good things poured out in destructive contexts. Fleeing to avoid death is good. Cowardice is fleeing in the face of things that should be faced. etc. 1/2

All evil=thus the necessary consequence of a world where some games are zero-sum, & the agents involved are so constituted as to view loss as the equiv to death (or worse) It will always be with us & within us, which is why religion is oft true even when it is not *truth* per se.

my take was that I could entirely understand, in a God-less universe, why some entities would do some things that we call evil, and others would do some things that we call good ... but only Theism gave any moral weight / MEANING to the distinction

I understand the argument, but it doesn't carry weight for me, since it only pushes the issue out one step further. Whether there is a god or not, we are creatures that crave meaning and connection. That fact seems to me to be the seat of of moral weight.

To put it another way, I see no reason a priori why the preferences of a God who set the game in motion should be more transcendentally weighty (though I'd buy the argument for "more practically compelling") than preferences of the agents who must play the game.
