It is a mystery how these things are decided. No one insists on calling Rome “Roma” or Munich München, yet all the talking heads mysteriously fall in line for these random localizations. Is it just insecurity? A need to appear better informed than the viewer?

It’s to sound more informed than the viewer. They do it all the time, seemingly at random and en mass. The first time I noticed it as a kid was when for a period they decided that they were gonna say the word “harassment “in the British fashion.
