2/ and Grinch is dead on accurate calling Billions out for this; it's a prime offender. I loved s1, had questions about s2, and hated (and bailed on) s3. A heel turn every now and then, adequately set up, etc. works.

3/ Real life has surprising realignments very rarely, bc people have surprising realignments very rarely...but it does happen. So, maybe I let you get away w Attorney Chuck Rhoades allying w Bobby Axelrod after 2 seasons of animosity, bc common enemy. But...

4/ ...we ALSO have the non binary [ 🙄 ] woman betray Bobby and become his biggest enemy ever because ... why? Is that in keeping with her character? No. It's a surprise twist that "keeps things fresh".

5/ Billions is pure wordcel entertainment. There's constant dopamine hits from constant betrayals and counter betrayals and counter-counter-betrayals. When AIs dream we get pictures of recursive dogs and landscapes. When wordcels dream we get ... this.

6/ Yes. One of the compliments I enjoy hearing most about my novels is "I went back and I re-read them ... and the first time, everything was a complete surprise, but this time through everything was telegraphed in advance and it was so obvious!"https://twitter.com/wraithburn/status/1495401287143280640 …

It's like what they say about speechwriting. Tell the audience what you are going to tell them, tell them, tell them what you told them. The whole point of writing is to lead others through words. You have to signal your intent.

7/ I aim to write that way not because I want that explicit reaction on the second reading, but because I want that IMPLICIT reading at the end of the first reading. Thematic coherence and unity is deeply satisfying.

8/ Chekovs' gun is an important tool bc if the culmination of a story is someone opening up a drawer and pulling out a hidden gun, the payoff (such as it is) is weak and comes from nowhere. ...unless, of course, there was constant discussion the whole time about hidden weapons!

Too many people assume that the mush of concepts in their head is also in the reader's head, and that the ideas do not need any lead up. I was taught in dancing you have to show what you intend clearly as the leader, so the follower can do their part. Do the same when writing.

10/ re this > Too many people assume that the mush of concepts in their head is also in the reader's head, and that the ideas do not need any lead up. a lot of bad fiction is bad bc author has resonances in his head that he wants the reader to get ...but he never shares them

a mark of really good fiction for me is that I find myself thinking about the motivations and secret thoughts of the characters as if they are real people

Aloysha Karamazov and David Copperfield are real people. Can't convince me otherwise.
