2/ I am all in favor of people buying / holding reference books! ... in fact, I think that this is the CORRECT approach. Dig into details as you need them, instead of studying-then-forgetting-then-never-using.https://twitter.com/mattbramanti/status/1494767151907053573 …

Pretty sure if I'm studying electrical engineering I don't need 19th century feminist literature.

Ehh. I learned a lot in my MechE undergrad that could have been helpful depending on where I ended up. As is, I haven't needed Thermo in a long time. Of course, the Three Laws of Thermo are invaluable as an analytic framework for just about anything.

Most of the value of Thermo isn't in doing the math but recognizing that the cooling system guys have something important to do and you need to make sure you interface well with them.

It's not 95% garbage if you're in a engineering program. I currently only use about a third of what I learned in my major classes, but Civil Eng is a really broad field, and which third it is has changed as I've changed jobs. 1/n

Frex, I did a small steel design 3 yrs after college, then didn't touch that for 24 years. But now I'm doing it again. Counting the background classes, somewhere around 50% - 60% of my classes were useful, or could be if my career goes in a different direction. 2/n

A CS degree (not sure how this generalizes to other STEM) is only about 50% garbage, but 100% learnable for free in much less time
